With the Euro VI, truck manufacturers will still be lacking chips

Roberto Cortes, VWCO's CEO, says heavy trucks will demand more semiconductors with the Euro VI legislation

With the introduction of the Euro VI regulations in January 2023, the production problems faced by truck manufacturers in Brazil due to the lack of semiconductors will aggravate. The problem has persisted since last year, affecting the automotive sector globally.

Roberto Cortes, Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus’ CEO, admits that there is a tendency to reduction of the supply shortage in this area beginning next year due to the entry of new players in the segment and a higher product offer. But in Brazil, especially, truck manufacturers tend to face greater difficulties due to the new pollutant emissions legislation.

“On one side, the number of chips in the trucks will increase. On the other side, there will be a demand for a new generation of semiconductors, which offer is still low”, pondered the executive. He cites examples as the ESP, an active stability system, which will be mandatory with the Euro VI, and the electronic controls to be added to the engines and the post-treatment, from a generation still inexistent here.

Without disclosing numbers, Cortes told the number of incomplete vehicles parked at the plant yard is significant. “We are using provisional parts to take them out of the production line but invoicing for the dealer net happens only after the replacement of the components.”

Unlike other heavy truck manufacturers, such as Mercedes-Benz and Scania, VWCO kept its production uninterrupted this year without any total or partial line stoppage. According to the CEO’s evaluation, this is due to many factors, among them the company headquarters located in Brazil and the supplying park in the factory area.

During the announcement of the VW Truck Rental service, in a partnership with VW Financial Services this Thursday, 8/25, Cortes also talked about the company’s internationalization process, remembering that its exports grew 20% in the first semester.
