Abeifa associates sold 37.5% less up to August
With eight months behind in 2022, it is already possible a bet with a great chance of success: the brands associated with Abeifa, the Brazilian association of automotive vehicles importers and manufacturers, will close the year with the worst sales result in 15 years.
Sales from January through August were little more than 11.2 thousand units, compared to 17.9 thousand in the same period of 2021 – a 37.5% fall. In August, there were only 1,577 vehicles licensed, 27.9% below the result in the same period the last year. Even though they were 12.6% higher than in July and the best in a single month in 2022.
To avoid a new negative year record after December, the eleven brands associated with the organization would need to achieve more than 14 thousand sales in the last four months, a monthly average of 3.5 thousand, more than double the registered in the first eight months of 2022. Very unlikely, therefore.
This way, the last result inferior to 2022 was obtained in 2007, when 12.5 thousand automobiles and light commercial vehicles from the associated brands reached the streets. Even in 2020, with the health measures that took to dealerships on lockdown for weeks, the sector had 27.4 thousand vehicles sold.
The current performance confirms the declining curve started in 2014 when 96.6 thousand units were sold. Already in 2019, before the pandemic, the sales were limited to 34.6 thousand, against 37.6 thousand in 2018. Exactly one decade ago, the importers deplored the significant fall of their sales to 129 thousand units, compared to 199 thousand in 2011!
Nonetheless, the president of Abeifa, João Henrique Garbin de Oliveira, prefers to see “a half-full glass” and sees in the positive oscillation in August a light for the companies he represents:
“There is a repressed demand for imported vehicles with more electrification technology, both 100% electric and hybrids. Nonetheless, due to the components shortage, especially semiconductors, our headquarters cannot deliver us more expressive volumes”.
