After a catastrophic 2021, with plants stopped for more than five months, a fall to third place after five consecutive years as Brazilian market leader, General Motors is closing 2022 fully recovering its space.

While automobile and light commercial sales went 1.4% down from January through November, GM advanced 24% and the first-placed, Fiat, fell 14% and Volkswagen 14%. With 258.9 vehicles licensed, GM claimed a 14.7% market share, 3% more than in the same period last year and took second place from Volkswagen.

The difference from Fiat, which went back to the lead in 2021, is still large: 7.4 percentual points. Even though it was considerably less than the 10.5 points one year ago. To this recovery contributed especially the better offer and the management of components over the last months.

With more chips and parts in the plants, the manufacturer succeeded in delivering the overdue vehicles. Its main products are now being offered almost paired with the demand. One example is the Tracker, an SUV made in São Caetano do Sul, SP, which can end the year leading the largest segment of the internal automobile market for the first time.

Last year, the model was 5th in the SUV ranking. After the first eleven months of 2022, it is the leader, with 62.5 thousand units sold. This volume means a 46% leap over the sales in the same period last year.

The SUV segment advanced less than 4%, on average, despite having most of the launches and vehicle updates in the internal market last year.

The most harmed Chevrolet model in 2021 due to the lack of components, the Onix hatch, which was the Brazilian market bestseller for many years, did not recover its position yet but already shows in second place after the first eleven months of 2022. In 2021, it occupied the 5th place.

In the 14 vehicle categories defined by Fenabrave that reach relevant sales volume, Chevrolet leads four, losing only to Fiat, the leader in five, three of them commercial vehicles,

Considering only passenger cars, GM took back the lead year-to-date until November with a 16.6% share, followed by Fiat (15.4%) and Volkswagen (14.9%). In one year, the previous leader, VW, lost almost 2.5 percentual points, while Fiat kept in second and GM advanced 4.2 points.
