Electric and hybrid vehicle sales gain consistency and reduce the relevance of gasoline-powered models

The Brazilian market registered the highest volume of electrified automobiles and light commercial vehicles since 2012, when ABVE, the Brazilian Electric Vehicle association, started the segment’s historical series.
According to licensing data, the deliveries last year reached 49.2 thousand units, 40.8% more than the 34.9 thousand units sold in 2021.
The continuous advance of electrified vehicles shows clearly the negative trend the gasoline-powered models are beginning to follow. In 2022, electric and hybrid registers overcame for the first time vehicles powered by the fossil fuel. At the same time, the gasoline vehicles market was reduced by 85, from 53.5 thousand units in 2021 to 48.8 thousand.
With these numbers, both categories finished 2022 with the same market share among light vehicles, 2.5%. It is worth remembering that in 2021, electric and hybrid vehicles were 1.8%, and gasoline models were 2.7%.
Fully electric vehicles sold 8.4 thousand units, 195% more than in 2021 (2.8 thousand). Hybrid sales grew 27%, from 32.1 thousand to 40.8 thousand units.
“We are seeing a constant and robust growth of electric and hybrid vehicle sales for the fifth year in a row, despite Brazil doesn’t have a national incentive plan for the sector. The consumer already sees the electric as a viable option to the conventional vehicles”, says Adalberto Maluf, president of ABVE.
In the truck and buses segment, considering electric and gas-powered vehicles, the market jumped from 405 units in 2021 to 1.1 thousand in 2022, a 172% increase. Seven hundred forty-nine registered units were electric, a 139% high, and 356 were gas-powered models, a 275% expansion.
