The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is ensured for the next 15 years, the three manufacturers announced this Monday, 2/6. The global partnership had been close to rupturing in the last years, especially after 2018, due to the scandal involving Carlo Ghosn, the former CEO who created the alliance in 1999.
The decision demanded a substantial reduction of Renault’s share in Nissan, from 43.4% to 15% – the same share the Japanese manufacturers has in the French company – and other actions such as the purchase by Nissan of 15% of Ampere, Renault’s electric vehicle and software division.
The agreement also includes new operational projects and unprecedented vehicles in various regions. In Europe, for instance, the companies will produce, in 2026, an electric van named FlexEVan, while in South America and India, it will be developed vehicles on joint platforms, said Jean-Dominique Senard, Alliance board’s president, and the CEOs Luca de Meo, from Renault, Makoto Uchida, Nissan’s and Tako Kato, Mitsubishi’s.
Nissan and Mitsubishi, which also studies participate in Ampere, will become customers of Horse, a Renault Group specialized in low-emission internal combustion and hybrid powertrain technologies (ICE).
With the new deal, electrification will gain space in the partners’ next moves regarding automobiles and commercial vehicles, always maintaining a high level of component sharing between them.
Four projects are defined for Latin America. The main novelty is a new half-ton pickup developed by the Renault Group and shared with Nissan, which will be produced in Cordoba, Argentina, in the same plant as the Nissan Frontier and Renault Alaskan, which will still be manufactured.
Nissan and Renault also committed to selling affordable A-segment electric vehicles in the region based on the CMF-AEV platform (Common Module Family). In Mexico, Nissan will produce a new model for Nissan. It will be the first French brand model in the country after 20 years.
To India and for export, the partners intend to collaborate on various vehicles, including electric SUVs and a Nissan car bases on the Renault Triber.
