Three in ten vehicles in Europe in 2022 had some degree of electrification. Full-electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars did achieve a 31.7% sales share, according to Dataforce.
Full-electric vehicles, the BEVs, achieved a 14% share with 1.57 million units sold and had the highest growth over the previous year: 29%.
The category’s best seller car was the Tesla Model Y (137.8 units), trailed by its brand mate, Model 3, with 92 thousand registers. The Volkswagen ID.4 was third, with 68.5 thousand units.
Hybrids also achieved a significant advance of 21% in the annual comparison with 986 thousand units negotiated, 8.7% of the total sales and almost the same share of plug-in hybrids (9%), which had a slight 2% fall to a little more than one million units.
Combustion model sales declined significantly. Gas-powered vehicles, still the main European consumer preference, had a 47% share in 2022, 9% less than in 2021.
Diesel vehicles’ slumped by 19% from the previous year. This fuel is the energy source for only 18% of the vehicles sold last year. If this pace is maintained, diesel models and BEVs will already change position in the sales ranking in 2023.
