Light vehicle sales in February were limited to 119,755 units, 2.7% less than in the same month last year when there were 123 thousand registers. Compared to January (130.5 thousand), the fall was 8.2%.
At the monthly balance data release this Thursday, 3/2, Fenabrave’s president José Maurício Andreta Jr. attributed the fall in last month’s sales to the number of working days – just 18 in February – four days less than in January. Nonetheless, the fall compared to last year’s first bimester shows the automobile and light commercial vehicles market isn’t showing any perspective of reaction.
Andreta Jr. tries to show less pessimism this month than what the automotive sector’s representative organizations expressed at the beginning of February. According to him, the numbers shown by different segments represented by Fenabrave can be seen as positive before the conjuncture challenges, “as high-interest rates and the beginning of the year’s seasonality”.
“Practically all segments grew in the bimester compared to 2022, especially the motorcycle market, a category with good growth perspectives for this year according to our forecasts”.
In the bimester, the automobile and light commercial vehicles market had a 4.4% high, with 250.5 thousand deliveries this year (239.7 thousand in 2022). This performance does not reflect better times for the sector, as the comparison includes last year’s sales when dealers were totally out of stock due to the semiconductors shortage that harmed the manufacturers’ production.
“The growth over last years is greatly related to the peak of the lack of products crisis that hit the automotive sector, especially in 2021 and 2022”, admitted Andreta Jr.
Electrified light vehicles
The electrified automobile and light commercial vehicle market had 4,294 units delivered in February, a volume close to January’s (4,502 thousand), which had four more working days. Hybrids keep prevailing in this segment, with a share of over 80%.
