Creta leads SUVs and avoids an even greater Hyundai fall

The Korean brand fell by 22% as the market grew 4% in the first bimester

The Creta led sport-utility sales in Brazil in the year’s first two months. With almost 5 thousand units sold in February, Hyundai’s model amounted to 9.6 registers this year and overcame Chevrolet Tracker (9.1 thousand), the previous month and 2022 leader.

Manufactured in Piracicaba, SP, since 2016, the Creta is in its second generation and was the second best-selling SUV in 2018, its best performance until now. In the first two months of this year, its sales corresponded to almost half the Hyundai’s deliveries.

Wasn’t for the good performance of the SUV in the Brazilian market’s largest segment (47% of automobile sales in 2023) the brand would face much bitter numbers.

The 20.2 thousand vehicles delivered to consumers in the bimester indicate a 22% fall from the same period last year, while the automobile and light commercial vehicles market had an average growth of over 4%.
Contributed to this is the abrupt sales fall of the HB20 compact since January and, in smaller proportion, the New Tucson medium SUV’s.

Since the middle-2022, the model made by Caoa in Anápolis, GO, practically stopped to be offered at the dealerships. From July through December, only 160 units were sold.

The CAOA Group says it’s a punctual problem, and the low offer is due to “necessary updates caused by the legislation changes (Proconve)’, but the Tucson will remain in production.

Wasn’t for the lack of other product, Hyundai would be the third brand in the segment ranking. In the first bimester, as the Creta alone had a 10.14% share, GM achieved 10.38%, but with the total sales of the national Tracker and Trailblazer and the imported Equinox.

The segment’s lead keeps with Jeep, which sold 17.6 thousand SUVs, an 18.5% share. Volkswagen had 16.8 thousand vehicles sold, a 17.8% share. In February, the difference between the leaders was bout one thousand vehicles.
