Market reacts to promotions and grows in March

The retail promotions intensified after a weak first bimester caused a positive reaction in the automobile and light commercial vehicles market in March. Preliminary data show nearly 187.2 thousand deliveries in the month, 38% more than in March 2022, when 135.6 units were delivered and 56% over February (120.3 thousand).

The second month this year had only 18 working days due to the Carnival holidays, while March had 23 (22 in 2022).

Therefore, the daily average sales balance was positive, with a 21.7% growth from 6.7 thousand to 8.1 thousand units compared to the previous month.

The beginning of 2022 was much more critical due to the semiconductors shortage that impeded the production in a satisfactory volume to demand the brand new models demand.

The components shortage reduced over the second semester of 2022 and became concerning once more in February and March this year, when some manufacturers, such as Volkswagen, announced collective vacations for lack of chips and others decided to halt the assembly lines due to an alleged retail retraction, as General Motors and Hyundai.

Retail promotions, such as no-interest financing, free IPVA, and even one year of free fuel, helped attract consumers in March to achieve 438.7 thousand deliveries in the trimester. This year’s expansion reached 17%, considering the 376 thousand cars and light commercial vehicles sold in the same period in 2022.

Despite the positive performance compared to 2022, the Brazilian market still presents numbers under those registered in 2021’s first quarter, when sales reached 500 thousand units.

The official Brazilian market balance will be released on Tuesday, 4/4, by Fenabrave, when the association’s president should announce the intention to establish a sector agreement to create entry vehicles cheaper than the two only survivors of this kind, Fiat Mobi and Renault Kwid.
