The Mining and Energy minister, Alexandre Silveira, declared at the opening of Anfavea’s seminary about electrification in Brazil that the country should become a great producer of batteries for electric vehicles.
“The government will incentivize local battery production, and not only through tax reduction’, he revealed. The process would have two phases: “One will be the incentive to research and development and the other regarding production”.
Silveira said more than once that Brazil has one of the world’s cleanest energy matrixes and a great mineral offer, including lithium. “The country can produce batteries and gain scale with exports”, said Silveira about the need of high volumes to justify investments in electrification.
The minister also talked about biofuels and ethanol: “We want to look to the future focusing on the flex hybrids”. He said the government intends to work with the private initiative to generate more production and jobs.
About battery production, Anfavea’s president, Márcio da Lima Leite, recalled that many manufacturers are already creating partnerships to produce minerals in Brazil and Argentina:
“We can invest in battery production, with the possibility to export. But it will not happen in the short term. In the beginning, we will need to import, but, in a second phase, Brazil could be able to supply the internal market and also export.”
