Scania’s bet on gas as a transition toward carbon-neutral cargo transportation was strengthened with the expansion of its truck line offer.
The manufacturer is offering options with a 900 km range and a new 460 cv engine. The first deliveries are expected for the first quarter of 2024.
With the new options, Scania expects to provide features the current lineup – with up to 500 km range and 280 cv, 340 cv and 410 cv engines – did not offered.
As a first answer, the manufacturer developed the X410. The truck is based on a 6 x 2 or 8 x 2 long-wheelbase chassis that has space for eight gas cylinders at each side, totaling 406 m³ of gas. It promises a 900 km autonomy.
According to Marcelo Gallao, new business development director, the idea is to offer a long-distance vehicle without penalizing cargo capacity due to the cylinders’ weight.
“In a double-trailer configuration it could haul up to 30 pallets and have a 56 ton capacity (6×2) or 29 GVW in the 8×2 configuration. And now with a possibility to drive from North to South of the country, as it can overcome the lack of gas refueling points on the way”.
As it offers more autonomy, Scania adds to the gas lineup the 460 cv engine option. Despite with up to 500 km autonomy, as it cannot add more gas cylinders to the trailer, the new power allows the use of road applications up to 65 tons in up to seven-axle compositions.
Since it began to offer gas trucks, which can also use biomethane, in 2019, Scania has already delivered 750 units.
“We shall surpass one thousand vehicles this year”, said Alex Nucci, sales director. “By 2025, we expect gas trucks should be from 10% to 15% of the national production”.
