Stellantis and Samsung SDI signed this Monday, 7/24, an agreement to construct a second battery plant in the United States. The new venue should begin to operate in 2027 with an initial production capacity of 34 GWh.

In May last year, the joint venture of both companies, StarPlus Energy, announced the commitment to a first unity in Kokomo, Indiana, with a US$ 2.5 billion investment and a capacity of 33 GWh. The production start is estimated for the first quarter of 2025.

According to Carlos Tavares, Stellantis’ CEO, the new unit should support the manufacturer’s aim to launch at least 25 battery vehicles in the North American market by the end of the decade. “We keep adding more capacity in the United States with our great partner Samsung SDI and establishing the next steps to achieve our commitment to carbon neutrality up to 2028”, he said in a note.

“The second plant would accelerate our advance in the United States market and help Stellantis to advance North America’s transition toward an electric vehicle era, supplying products with the highest safety and quality levels”, completed Yoon-ho Choi, Samsung SDI’s CEO.

Stellantis’s Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan aims to have only battery-electric vehicles in Europe and 50% of passenger cars and light trucks in the United States. To do so, the company works to achieve a 400 GWh global capacity. The manufacturer expects to be carbon-neutral by 2038.

The new plant location is still under study.
