By a small margin of about five hundred vehicles, Volkswagen has taken the lead in SUV sales in Brazil. After the first seven months of 2023, the German brand totaled 75.6 thousand vehicles sold and an 18.2% market share, surpassing the 75.1 thousand Jeep SUVs (18%).

The results are especially significant as since 2016, its first full year producing in Brazil, Jeep was comfortably leading SUVs sales with shares always above 20%.

In the first seven months last year, it had 20.5% of the segment sales, while Volkswagen had 16.5%, four points less.
Volkswagen’s historic overpass in 2023 is due to its market growth over the average and Jeep’s sales decline.

The sport-utility segment reached 415.7 thousand registers until July, 12% more than last year. In the same comparison, VW grew 23.7%, and Jeep sales fell 1.3%.

Jeep’s bestselling models – the Compass (35 thousand units) and Renegade (27.9 thousand) – sold less, and only the national top-of-the-line Commander (11.9 thousand ) grew slightly by eight hundred units.

On the other way, Volkswagen’s three models in the segment had significant advances. The T-Cross, the country’s second bestselling SUV in 2022, now is the leader, with 40.6 thousand units negotiated in the year, almost 12% more than last year.

In July, 8.5 thousand units were sold, the best monthly result in the year and enough to assure a comfortable first place in 2023, 5.3 thousand units ahead of the Hyundai Creta, which overcame the Compass by a little margin.

The Nivus already has 27.4 thousand units sold, 10% more. Even the Argentinian Taos, which is still a discreet brand’s coadjutant, jumped from 5 thousand to 7.6 thousand registers, a more than 50% increase.
