Vamos, a Simpar Group’s vehicle rental company, bought 140 trucks from Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus through the discount program established by the government. It is the largest purchase announced since the beginning of the plan, on June 5.
To meet the established conditions, contribute to the national fleet renovation and obtain the discount, Vamos bought 140 trucks at least 20 years old in the market to be recycled.
The company bought vehicles operating mainly in the ports of Rio de Janeiro, RJ, and Santos, SP, from 23 through 53 years old, owned by private drivers. The purchases amounted to R$ e million.
To complete the renovation cycle, Gerdau entered the partnership to recycle the old trucks bought by Vamos. The steel manufacturer, Latin America’s largest iron scrap recycler, will use the material to produce 100% recycled steel.
In the transaction announcement, at Gerdau’s industrial unit in Araçariguama, SP, Fernando Simões, Simpar’s CEO, recalled that the process benefited the old truck owners. “Vamos is buying an old truck and helping the professionals to buy a semi-new. He jumps from a 30 years-old vehicle to a 12 years-old one”, he said.
“The fleet renovation, defended for more than 20 years by Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus, also unlocks the economy”, commented Roberto Cortes, VWCO’s CEO. “The program enables higher road safety, more productivity, profitability in transport operations and lower pollution”.
