A silver Creta Ultimate 2.0 was chosen by Hyundai to mark two million automobiles produced by the brand in Brazil. The number was officially achieved on Monday, 10/9.

The Piracicaba plant in São Paulo began operations on September 20, 2012. The vehicle number two million was manufactured exactly after 11 years and 20 days. The one-million mark was registered in 2018, just five years and ten months after the plant inauguration and the manufacture of the first HB20.

“The two million vehicles produced in a record time are proof of the excellent use of our installed capacity, practically without any interruption or reduction of our working shifts”, celebrated Airton Cousseau, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Brasil and Hyundai Motor Central and South America.

Since 2019, after two great updates and investments to improve capacity, the Piracicaba plant can produce up to 210 thousand units yearly in three working shifts. The initial capacity was 150 thousand.

Hyundai estimates the average use of the capacity as over 95%. The yearly record was achieved in 2022, when 209 thousand vehicles were assembled, overcoming the 203 thousand produced in 2019, before the pandemic.

It would be no surprise if a new record happens at the end of the year, even by a small margin. The plant has produced more than 160 thousand units from January through September. If Hyundai maintains the monthly average of nearly 18 thousand units registered until now, it will produce at least 211 thousand vehicles in the year.

Internal market

The pioneer HB20 accounts for most of Hyundai’s Brazilian production. Considering hatch and sedan, more than 1.6 million units were manufactured. Launched in 2017, the Creta had 400 thousand units produced.

Most of the automobiles assembled in Piracicaba were sold in the internal market. Only 60 thousand – 3% of the total – were shipped to other markets over more than a decade. They went to Latin American countries, such as Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Hyundai is Brazil’s fifth best-selling automobile and light commercial vehicles brand, considering vehicles made in Piracicaba and assembled by the partner Caoa in Anápolis, GO. According to Fenabrave, 128 thousand units, mostly automobiles and SUVs, were licensed in the first nine months of the year.

With 61.8 thousand units, the HB20 hatch is the third best-selling passenger car in the period, after the Volkswagen Polo (71.9 thousand) and Chevrolet Onix (70.8 thousand). The brand also sold 44.9 thousand Creta and 20.5 thousand HB20 S.
