General Motors dismissed 800 workers from its plant in São José dos Campos, SP, 20% of the unity’s staff. The number was being kept secret by the manufacturer, which until now did not reveal how many employees were dismissed in São Caetano do Sul and Mogi das Cruzes, SP.
According to the SJC union, GM’s information came only yesterday (10/24) night, despite the temporary layoff deal previewing jobs stability warranty signed in June by the company.
The first information about the cut came out on Saturday, 10/21, when the dismissed workers began to receive telegrams from the company. On Monday, 10/23, the plant workers went on strike, demanding the dismissals be canceled.
In a symbolic gesture, this Wednesday, 10/25, 100 uniforms were hung on the plant’s fence near the factory’s entry.
The metalworkers unions from São José dos Campos, São Caetano do Sul, and Mogi das Cruzes will meet the state secretary of Finances and Planning, Samuel Yoshiaki Oliveira Kinoshita today. They also sent a letter to the Federal Government requesting a meeting with President Lula and the Labor Minister to discuss measures to support the workers.
