The strike completes nine days, and the manufacturer remains "intransigent", according to the unions

The São José dos Campos Metalworkers Union, Sindmetal, revealed this Tuesday, 10/31, the number of employees dismissed by GM in its plants in the state of São Paulo. The company fired 1,245 workers: 840 in São José dos Campos, 300 in São Caetano and 105 in Mogi das Cruzes.
Moved by this massive layoff, communicated to the workers by e-mail or telegrams, the three plants’ employees have been on strike for nine days. Conciliatory meetings already happened, but the manufacturer remains unmoved and has not reviewed any dismissal.
According to Sindmetal, GM action is illegal: “There is a decision from the Supreme Federal Court determining that before any collective dismissal, any company shall negotiate with the category’s union, and it never happened with the metalworkers’ unions from São José, São Caetano and Mogi”.
In São José dos Campos and Mogi das Cruzes, there is another aggravating factor: GM has firmed temporary layoff agreements with the unions that ensure job stability for all employees. The first deal was firmed on June 28, 2023.
The document ensures job stability for all workers “while employees have suspended contracts”. The job stability is valid until May 2024, and the limit date for the temporary layoff is still in course in São José dos Campos.
“GM has teared up the deal signed with the union”, asserts Sindmetal’s vice president Valmir Mariano. “The main condition for the workers to approve the temporary layoff proposed was job stability for all. That’s why even the workers who have not been dismissed are united in this fight to cancel the cuts. It’s a fight for all workers and society, and we will not give up.
