Facing Mercedes-Benz’s decision to dismiss 3.6 thousand employees, 1.4 thousand of them currently under temporary work contracts, the metalworkers of the manufacturer’s São Bernardo do Campo plant, in the ABC region, decided this Thursday, 9/8, to paralyze the local production until next week.
The information was released by the ABC Metalworkers Union, saying about 6 thousand workers were at the assembly this afternoon. A new negotiation meeting with the company management will happen on Tuesday, 9/13.
A union’s note said that “the protest approved this Thursday is an answer to the company’s announcement that it will not hire 1,400 workers currently under temporary contracts, and to dismiss 2,200 logistic, maintenance, tooling, and laboratories workers, as well as from axles and transmissions manufacture for medium trucks.
Also in the afternoon, Mercedes-Benz Caminhões e Ônibus released an official note without confirming, nonetheless, the number of dismissals that may happen due to the project to outsource part of the company’s operations and services:
“Keeping our tradition to find solutions through dialog, we are opening negotiations with the ABC Metalworkers Union to discuss the measures of our transformation plan for our truck and bus operations in Brazil that will impact our employees”.
The same note informs that the company will always keep its commitment to transparency and respect do workers and their union representatives “regarding the urgent need of restructuration of areas and, consequently, the assurance of the sustainability of long-term business in the country”.
Without mentioning the term outsourcing, it also says it is important to emphasize that Mercedes-Benz will look for supplying companies “that will absorb a significant volume of business in materials and services – preferably from the São Paulo and ABC region, also committed to our local community”.
Finally, the manufacturer concludes that it is strengthening the intention to make all possible efforts to reach a negotiated solution, “always with transparency, respect to all those involved and committed to the society”.
