The automotive industry’s global production and logistics instability were pointed out as the main reasons for a new fall in the Brazilian imported vehicles market. According to Abeifa, the Brazilian association of vehicle importers and manufacturers, the lack of finished products at the dealerships was key to the weak sales performance.
Last month, only 1,818 automobiles and light commercial vehicles were sold by the eleven brands associated with the organization, 21.1% less than in October and 3% less than in the same month in 2021.
“Unfortunately, the imports segment suffered much with the lack of products due to the instability of semiconductors supply. We had a chance to reach at least the same numbers as last year when we had 73,176 units registered [national and imported]. Our forecast for this year is reaching 55 thousand units, an expressive fall of almost 25%”, says João Henrique Garbin de Oliveira, president of Abeifa.
In the first eleven months, including national and imported vehicles, the performance fell 23.9%, as Abeifa’s associates negotiated only 51 thousand vehicles. In November, 4.4 thousand were sold, almost 2.6 thousand of it national products.
The vehicles brought from other markets were the smallest part in 2022: 18.8 thousand registers from January through November. Therefore, the segment will close 2022 with the smallest number of imports in 15 years.
In 2007, 12.5 thousand imported automobiles and light commercial vehicles were sold in the country. Even in 2020, with the health measures that took dealerships into lockdown for weeks, the sector had 27.4 thousand vehicles sold.
Nonetheless, Oliveira projects a less disturbing scenario for 2023, with a better component supply, especially semiconductors, enabling higher sales. “We expect to recover the years lost to the pandemic and the international component crisis”, says Abeifa’s president.
