Volkswagen presented this week the next generation of the ID. electric vehicle family’s drive system, which should reach the world market at the end of this year. The aim is to provide more performance and efficiency for the brand’s electric vehicles.
“The new APP550 powertrain delivers 210 kW (286 cv) and about 550 NM (56.0 kgfm), depending on the vehicle gear ratio”, informs the manufacturer. “The higher torque, particularly, enables a superior power development, both from standstill and high speed”.
The drive system with gearbox, rotor and stator, will be produced at the Volkswagen Components plant in Kassel, Germany. Alexander Krick, head of the division’s Electric Drive, Power Electronics and Transmission, recalls the company has invested in electric motors since 15 years.
“Based on years of experience, we optimized all the system through special steel sheets and customized machining processes. Therefore, we were able to improve efficiency significantly”, said Krick.
Volkswagen promises to launch electric models in Brazil beginning at the second semester by the ID.3. The company admits producing locally 100% electric cars in the future. One of them could be the just-presented small model ID.2.
